HI I just installed XP Pro and my computer keeps on restarting itself for no aparent reason. COuld it be the pc133 ram i just installed was bad, or could it be my installation of the Half-life platinum pack or is it a service/driver problem? Please help a brother out.

Make sure you re-format your hard drive before you install xp. XP works best when it thinks you hava a brand new computer.
Don't forget to make a boot disk.

borrow some memory from a pal and see if it works then.
applications shouldn't cause constant restarts under any circumstances.

I could not find the problem. I got my RAM replaced. Then i still had the same problem of the restart. i tried isolating the problem and I found that the more programs I would open the more of a chance that the computer with restart. I unchecked restart on errors from properties and the next time it happened i got a blue screen telling me of a memory dump. I then rolled back my system to see if it might have been a driver compatability problem but i still had the same problem. I checked out which services started up before the restart and I found that some service called wmdm would be the last service started before the reboot. I then disabled that service and restarted, same problem of a blue screen. So I decided it can be only two things 1. My Harddrive is messed up 2. I configured Windows XP wrong when i was messing around with it. I went with the later and i decided to format and re-install. SO far the system ran all night with no problem but i still have to run some tests. If I get another problem I will have to get my harddrive to a friends house and run Sysandra on it. I will keep everyone informed cause I see alot of people are having this problem. Hope I was some help

Update: I just had a brainstorm it might be the new DetonatorXP 21.81 drivers that caused the problem. I will have to check on that.....

You can see whats wrong, if you start the Event Viewer under Administative Tools, in the control panel... I had the same problem when burning cd's (it just restarted just as it began to burn)... In the Ewent Viewer it said that it was an "ACPI error", so i just installed another burning-program, and now it works fine...

Xp Professional has a big problem in that it restarts when I try to use the internet 1 out of every 6 times! whats worse is there is no explanation of why it does this only that I get errors like.... IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR EQUAL? Thats odd cause when you check with microsofts database that error comes from upgrading from win 98 or ME! I started fresh with a brand new format? Is this happening with a lot of you guys or is this just me?

I have recently installed XP prof. and have had the same issue with restarts.. reinstalled and reformatted and still to no luck.. Its getting to be a pain in the Neck to trace which program is causing the crash.. Linux Lives ON!!!!!!

Im also submitted to Bill Gates 'unexpected-restart' new feature.
Everytime i rename large files, delete some folders, install some stuff....it just f**kin crash.
and i got the same blue screen as everybody telling me some realy unclear stuff about my memory my drivers and bla bla bla....WHEN IS THE PATCH COMMING OUT?

I had the same problem I reinstalled xp pro 5 times fomated reformated but still kept getting error messages and always restarting. Then I decided to just put back Win 98 back on then instead of doing a full clean install of XP I used the upgrade option now my computer works great for only two weeks now but before it would happen 30 minutes after I installed xp.

I feel as if I owe an explanation for what I have found...!
I too had the same problem with Windows XP restarting. In short, I tried everything that was listed on these forum pages - to no avail. A list of options I tried:
- Different RAM
- Uncheck the reboot option in Control Panel Properties
- Different OS System
- Barebones System (Hard Drive and Video Card only)
- New drivers for modem and sound cards
- Flash BIOS, and reinstalled a newer version
- Different power supply
- Different CMOS battery
- Checked Event Viewer daily
- Different Drivers for Printers and both CD-ROM's
- Different ProcessorNone of these options seemed to work for me, and of course, this took me a couple of weeks to weed through all of this mess. My problem was the motherboard in the end - I purchased a new one for $42, and it has worked beautifully for about a month. I have all peripherals back into this computer, only the motherboard is different and it works great!
If I had to do it all over again, I would take these steps first.
1. Check the RAM. Easy and cheap solution if it is the problem.
2. Check the Power Supply. In my case, I needed an upgrade from the 250W to a 300W.
3. Uncheck the Reboot option in Control Panel. This will still provide an error message, but it should not restart your computer.
4. Look for updated drivers for your computer's components. Have you purchased anything new that needs to be upgraded to Windows XP?
5. Try a different OS on your system. Do you still have the restart problems?
6. Lastly, BIOS might be a good place to look. Check it out!I hope this helps someone - thanks to everyone for their input in different forums!!
System:
Athlon 500mhz Slot Processor

56K Modem (this was compatible with WIN XP)
AGP Video Card
Acer CD-RW 12x8x32

Sound Blaster Pro 16
-- Sorry, I don't remember the motherboard numbers/model.
-- I know this description is shabby, but this wasn't my system to begin with!
