My operating system will not boot up so I am trying to do a repair using the XP CD. The problem I am getting is that when it asks me which operating system to repair, the one that I want to repair is not listed. I can however get into the recovery console and that does recognize my operating system. Can I somehow fix it from here so the repair will recognize my broken OS?
I also have the ability to copy files from a working OS directory into my broken OS directory if that would work.

If you only have Compaq Restore CD, you cannot do much repair with it. Compaq Restore CD is designed to reinstate your back to the factory settings.

Are you saying that when you boot from the XP CD it doesn't show XP being there to repair? What O/S does it show?

Have you tried booting in safe mode?

I have two operating systems on my computer, an old one that works and a new one with all of my programs installed on that does not. It recognizes the old one only when I try to repair, but both in the recovery console.
safe mode does not work

Another crazy bug fix is to unplug the HDD and plug a different in.
Let the Bios detect it and then revert back to connecting original disk and has worked for me sometimes.

What happens when I run fixmbr in the recovery console? I have not done that because it says that it could mess up my partitions and then neither operating system would work. If I tried that would it fix anything?
