Comment:

Hi, my laptop runnning XP Media Centre Edition won't boot as it reports hal.dll as either corrupt or missing. Now I would like to use the reapir feature off the XP disc, but my computer never shipped with a disc.

My desktop did, but that is XP Pro. I don't suppose the repair feature would work off the disk on a computer with a different edition.

Could anyone set me straight, please?

I wouldn't use the XP Pro CD. Contact Sony and request a Recovery CD.

I second jennifer. Unfortunately there is no repair features on recovery cd. It is very destructive and can be used only one way - to reinstate XP to pre-installed factory condition. Everything you saved on the HD will be gone.

hal.dll can be downloaded for free at many locations:

Version: 5.1.2600.2180

http://www.dlldump.com/download-dll...

The XP recovery console can be accessed with any XP or win2k CD ROM. Copy the file manually to C:\Windows\System32

If you DO NOT have your Windows XP disk

* Download RC.ISO from Here:

http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com...

* Now burn this ISO image to a CD and boot your computer with it.
* Once the CD is created, place it in the defunct computer
* Then reboot your broken PC with that CD in the CD-ROM drive.
* Make sure the PC is set to run from the CD as the primary boot device.
* When the PC boots, it will boot from the CD...after the first several screens load, you will be given a choice to choose R for Recovery Console. You will be asked to log in.

Thanks for the advice. I'm cahsing Sony for a disc, however, i'm trying the suggestion from Mattie, but my laptop won't boot from the disc. - I've set the boot order. I just put that file on a disc. Have I got this wrong? Is there anything I should know for putting this file on the disc?

Thanks

Mattie, please could you expand on your advice. I downloaded the ISO and burnt it to a disk but it didn't work. Computer is set to boot from CD. Is there something I need to do especially to put this image on a disk.

Thanks for your help.

nope, nothing special about it, it's just a basic XP boot disc providing access to the recovery console.

of course you cannot just burn the ISO as a file onto a CD-R. if you're using nero, close all wizards, go to the 'recorder' menu, choose 'burn image' and navigate to RC.ISO.

if you don't have nero (or any other burnsoft to burn image files) get this freebie:

Thanks for that, it's worked fine. All i need now is the administrator password. I'm sure that i never set one, but entering nothing, says invalid password!!! I'm tearing my hair out! Looks like I might have to do a clean install after all.
