My sister-in-law has a PC with XP Pro running and never changed her password when it was expiring and now she can't log on. I there any way to get around this to reset the password and log in ?

Yep, try starting in safe mode and logon as Administrator, in the Run box type: control userpasswords2.
From here u should be able to reset the password.
Hope this helps

How can I log in as Administrator if I don't have the password ? Is there a default ? Or is the default null ???
Thanks, Rence

Administrator password should be null (unless the person who installed XP was daft enuf to make one - if so, u can't get into Recovery Console either !!)
All is not lost if a password has been set, as a password reset disk can then be used.

I'm not an XP expert, but wouldn't leaving the Administrator password as NULL be the daft thing to do??
Wouldn't that be equivalent to not setting a root password on a UNIX/Linux system?

yes, there are some bugs out there that try to exploit weak administrator passwords such as:
<blank> 1234 123456 admin
etc...etc...
But, I will promise you that there are A LOT of blank admin passwords out there.
interesting trivia: Some unix systems don't use ROOT at all. ROOT has been renamed to "something else". Even ROOT is not always ROOT.

Worst case scenario, Go to www.bootdisk.com and DL the "startup disk" from them.
Boot to the "startup disk"
Within your C:\WINNT(Windows)\System32\Config\ you will find a file called SAM (with NO extension). Delete it, all passwords for all users have now been elinminated.
SAM = System Accounts Manager
