Running XP Pro. When I do a shutdown, everything shuts down normally and power turns off. But, when I do a restart, the computer changes to the "Windows is shutting down" screen and then locks up. Any one else having this problem or have a fix? I have only installed the OS and no other software. Change the video card, but it didn't have any affect.

System:
ASUS A7V266-E
AMD 1800+
Crucial Tech PC2100 x 256MB
Gainward Ti200 GF3 (Also tried a Diamond Viper 550)

There could be thousands of reasons but probably a hardware issue. Do a complete scandisk first.

When you say "When I do a shutdown, everything shuts down normally and power turns off", it means that you do boot once in a while. When it happens again, check your events viewer, you have maybe an answer there. Also check the device manager to see if you have any conflicts of anytype.

I have a similar problem. I'm running Windows XP Pro also, and I can chose to restart my computer without any problems. But if I chose to Shut Down the computer. It will not boot back up. What happens is everything seems to be running fine, all the fans are moving (processor and case fan) lights on the case are on, but I don't get any video (black screen) and no beep errors (however the HDD light will stay lit red for busy on the case). After about trying 15 times, it will finally start up again. Also, for the second time in 2 weeks, my computer just spontaneously restarted itself. I have had this system for about 2 weeks, the spontaneous restarts happened while surfing the net and while playing Empire Earth.

System:
Shuttle AK31A
Maxtor ATA133 80GB
AMD 1800+ XP
512MB Kingston PC2100DDR
Creative GeForce 256

Microsoft has a possible fix for this problem listed in Q307272.
I've just found it myself and have not tried it yet. I have the same problem as you (hang on restart but not shutdown) with an ASUS MB. I also had this problem with Win2000, but not when running Win98SE.

Here's a link to the article. It's about as vague as Q Articles usually are, but may be useful.

Good luck. I will be trying this tonight, so I will need some as well.

Me again. ASUS has apparently released a new BIOS (1006) that has fixed this problem on my PC. Although this problem is not listed as an addressed issue in 1005 or 1006, it seems to work fine.
Also be sure to update your VIA 4-in-1 Drivers, CMedia Audio Drivers and Promise ATA100/RAID Driver(s).
DO NOT use the Microsoft Update Site for Driver updates. Go to VIA or whatever other manufacturer of your components. Microsfot is good in updating their own stuff (SW updates), but they are less than good at drivers.
