Comment:

I have recentley installed XP PRO and it ran succesfully for about a week.....However it has now started to lock up every now and again while im on the internet, it just locks totally and nothing works at all and i have to manually reset and reboot, i did download the windows XP updates when prompted a few days after installing XP (mostly the IE 6 updates and service pack etc) and i was wondering whether this could have had anything to do with the problem??? has anyone else experienced this??? Also im new to XP and ive heard that yo can backtrack on XP so as you go back before the problem started and simply start from here again...is this true??? if so how do i go about this???

Any help will be much appreciated as this problem is so annoying and i simply have no explanation for it.

Regards.....Iain.....

Dear Friend,
In XP you can restore the state
of the system to an earlier point of time
by using a utility called system restore
To access system restore do the following

START-> ALL PROGRAMS->ACCESSORIES->SYSTEM TOOLS-> SYSTEM RESTORE
one thing you should remember is that you
can use system restore only if system restore points have been created by you or
by XP itself ,basically system restore points are a snapshot of your system on a
particular date and time ,when you ask the
system to be restored to a particular point
ineffect you are taking your system back to an earlier time when it properly worked or to say restore to a particular set of settings back in time
As far your freezing problem is concerned
could you provide me some more details like any error messages, etc I'll try to help you

There are no error messages at all and the pc siply freezes and the cursor just locks where it is on the screen...Nothing at all works on the keyboard and the only option is to press the reset button, this is happening quite regularly.

I would recommend you try Ad-Aware to remove any spyware and run the MSConfig.exe to clean and disable any problematic startup items.

I have already used something called Spybot search and destroy to remove any syyware and ive also used msconfig and nothing out of the ordinary is starting in there, all seems fine, im completley puzzled by this as XP Pro ran fine for a few days then this, im really wondering if it has something to do with the updates i downloaded.

I would try new ram.
Xp need lots of ram.
If you have two chip of ram try only one at a time.
Run a memory testing program to see if your ram is ok.
