how can I run a memory checker when I only have DOS. I am in the process of trying to install windows xp on a computer that doesn't have any other OS on it other than DOS

Sounds like a bad hard drive. I had that problem awhile back.

You download a program like memtest86 that runs before any OS loads. Just put it on a floppy.

While you're at it, check your hard drive. You can get a free diagnostic utility from the maker of your hard drive's web site. You can download it on another computer, and execute the download to make one or two self booting floppy(ies), then you boot your computer with the (first) floppy, and run the diagnostics - usually there is a short and a long test - it must pass all diagnostics.
