xp pro - hangs on welcome screen

tried to remove gravis joystick driver - system crashed and now when booting it hangs on welcome screen. Cant use keyboard or mouse. Loading in safe mode dosent help, either does loading last good startup. Registry/driver problem? How do I fix it?

I would try this:
To roll back to the previous version of a driver:
Open Device Manager. Right-click the device for which you want to reinstall the previous version of the driver, then click Properties. Click the Drivers tab. Click Roll Back Driver.
