I am running XP Pro, I have downloaded the latest drivers from HP for my HP CD Writer 7200. However, I cannot startup XP Pro with the HP 7200 attached, the system always hangs. Is there a way I can delete the offending files perhaps? HELP..!!

If the old driver was working before, try to roll back the driver.

This is the first time I have tried to install the CDR on XP. So unfortunately cannot roll back.

Sorry, I thought the CDR was working working before until you downloaded the latest driver.
I am pretty sure this HP 7200 CD-R is a first generation CD-R manufactured in 1996 or 1997 and was designed for Windows 95 at the time. The write/rewrite speed is 2X/2X.
The only thing I suggest is that you download the latest firmware (version 3.01) and flash your drive. If this does not work, you'd be better off to purchase a newer CD-R.

I've had a HP 7200-Extern (Parallel interface) and I've managed to let it works properly offcourse after getting some needed updates on the HP-site.
I installed it after started up XP and then plugged inn the CD-R in the LPT-port.
I know it's an unusual way of installing but it worked..., I used it now for about 3 months, after installing it's been recogniced properly after starting up XP.
And RedStar..., you're right it's one of the first generation with a max speed of 2x 2x.
That's why I recently (a week ago)installed a new one (a 16speed-burner).

Wish you luck..!!
