XP Pro Hangs At Splash Screen

Product: Dell Precision 370

My Dell Precision 370 with Windows XP Professional hangs at the Windows splash screen when booting up. However, if I add the "/sos" switch to the boot.ini it boots up fine. Can anyone tell me why?
