A few months ago I did a fresh install of XP Pro on my rebuilt computer and of course I went thru all the BSODs and all the other XP problems. But finally I got thu all of that. Well now I will leave the comp on for a few days (if it lasts that long) and come home and itll be frozen. Sometimes ill turn it on and leave it running over night and wake up and itll be frozen. No programs are open or anything. I just freezes. I have searched the forum and seen that people have recommended going to the clock setings and changing it from 133 to 100. I have not tried this yet ( i am at work) but I wanted to get any more suggestions so I have a list of solutions to take home so I can finally solve this. Any help/suggestions would help. Thanks
Specs:
-1.2 Athlon TBird
-ECS K7VZA MOBO
-512 MB SDRAM
-ECS 64 MB VID CARD
-40GB WD HD 7200
-16x CDRW
-40x CDROM
-3COM NIC
-FIREWIRE
-SB LIVE 5.1 CARD

My pc is doing the exact same thing and I cannot seem to figure it out. Seems to freeze up mostly when surfing, but it is completely random and could lock up at any time. I kind of feel like it is either Microsoft XP, Motorola modem, or the cpu causing the problem. I am going to first try to see if the system locks up without the modem and then try Win 98 on a different hard drive.
Any other ideas would be helpful.
Here are all the things I have done.
- Replaced motherboard
- Replaced power supply
- Replaced hard drive
- Replaced network card
- Replaced video card
- Replaced memory
- Fresh install of Win XP with network card and video card only installed. (No other software)
- Hooked cable modem through usb instead of network cardPC specs
Anthlon 1 gig
FIC Motherboard
Micron 256 memory
40X cdrom
24X cdrw
Firewire
ATI xpert 2000 video
3com Nic
SB live card
Maxtor 40 gig HD
Motorola 4100 cable modem
400 watt power supply

HP man is right. Check CPU Temperatures. Could be memory as well. Also, if you are willing to take the time, boot into safe mode and leave it there for a while. If the problem does not occur, it it a device or driver and you'll have to start hunting the little bugger down.

Its funny Jason and eric have the exact same network card.(3com NIC) I also had a 3com network card which had a conflict with my USB PCI CARD. In the device manager it didnt show any conflicts but after mutliple freezes on the internet I noticed that it only froze when my usb and network card were being used. I checked to see what IRQ's they were on and there happen to be 4 or 5 on the same IRQ. The only one's i payed attention to was my usb card and my NIC card. I moved around my usb card and my nic card and they would change irq's but they would still be stuck on the same one together. Tried a ton of diffrent combinations with no luck. I had another NIC card laying around and stuck it in and selected a diffrent IRQ all by itself. I learned one thing that is not all hardware gets along with eachother and there is hardware that will get along with almost anything its just hard to find it.
But anyway i would start checking for IRQ conflicts and to see what IRQ's are being used with what devices before u start swapping out everything. If all else fails make sure u update everything. Jason, if your computer freezes when your on the internet u can narrow it down to either usb or NIC. Have u tried a diffrent network card? Is everything up-2-date? Have u checked your IRQ's? Yours sounds like a IRQ conflict. As for eric's problem it could be a heat problem or could be anything.
Well thats all i have. good luck

I have heard this but can someone back me up?
In Windows XP and an ACPI installation, the IRQs are shared like crazy .. in theory it should be fine so long as Device Manager says there's no problem.
If the OS is installed as a STANDARD PC, the IRQs would not be shared so much as it is done with ACPI and you have much more control by reassigning and moving a card to a different slot.
Has anyone else seen this pattern? Check your device manager people and leave a quick note here if you want ..I'm just curious to see if it's true.

Well I know for a fact that just because the device manager says there are no conflicts doesn't actually mean there are no conflicts. I had about 5 devices on 1 IRQ. Not saying all the devices were conflicting but 2 of them were. Xp does have multiple devices sharing IRQ's and most of the time its ok. But there is hardware that will lock up ur computer in a clock cycle. I was able to move the pci card to a diffrent slot and I couldnt get the usb card and the NIc card off the same IRQ. I finally switched the NIC card and it automatically used a diffrent IRQ all by itself even though my old NIC card was in the exact same PCI slot. But thats all i have. I dont think i tried an ACPI installation with XP so I have nothing to add on that.

hey,
ive had teh same problem and only thing i can see i have in common with eric is the cpu (1.2 athlon)
i have tried everything!! ram swap, modem swap, installed win 98, xp pro it still does it!!
talking to one of the amd techs they mentioned that the core voltage for the 1.2 should be set at +1.75....mine is set at +1.79 (you can check in bios or download hmonitor) i havent tried adjusting this because a) you cant adjust it in the bios anb b) i have no idea what jumpers they are on my motherboard (m810lr piece of Sh##) anyone maybe check what yours are running at and let us know if any success?
cheers

Hey guys: I suggested this before but didn't hear if it helped. No guarantee, but take a look at my post dated 7/9/02 to message 31364 on this board (use the Message Find tool on the left hand side -- type in the message number 31364, select Windows XP, and click on Get Message). Let us know how you make out.
