I have a Compaq Presario 5000US with a 750Mhz AMD processor, 320MB of SDRAM, and a 30GB HD. It came with Windows ME but since then I have purchased Windows XP Professional (FULL VERSION) and I have f-disked and formatted the HD and installed the XP PRO fresh. It ran fine for about 4 months then about a month ago it has started locking up daily. I have done fresh installs 4-5 times since then and I have tried buying a new HD, video card, and network card. All of these showed to be useless attempts. I have also tested the ram stick by stick and still it does this -- I notice that it does it more when I connect to my DSL connection -- which by the way, when I try to connect to by clicking on the Start Button --> and the Connect To item it freezes for like 2-3 minutes and will not let me do anything. Anyway, its driving me bonkers and since the computer is only 1 year old I hate to go and buy another but that appears to be my only option -- any help will be greatly appreciated. If you needed anymore info on the problem or computer to help me figure out what to do please ask.

How do you connect to your DSL server? Is XP connecting directly or do you get connection from another computer? I mention this in case you are not aware that connecting to DSL with XP is different than with other Windows versions. You don't use an access manager. XP has PPPoE installed.

try this, i cant promise anything though
Problem ... After booting up Windows XP Pro.
Dial up Networking, Email editor plus some other progs would not work for at least 2mins every time. (Complete freezing)SOLUTION:
Start/Run/
Type in msconfig (click on OK)
At System Config Utility menu select...
Services
Then, untick Backround Intelligent Transfer Service.
Click on OK
Reboot - problem solved.
Hope this helps others. This solution was posted on this forum lately, author not known but thanks whoever you are.

I tried the above response with turning off the Background Intelligent Transfer Service, but unfortunatly this did not help things -- any other ideas will be appreciated. Thank you for your help.

I have had your same problems, AIM me:
Ryanhensly
and we can talk, because XP has ISSUES with DSL. Believe me, its a software problem, so don't go out and get a whole new machine.

I have had exactly the same promlem, drove me nutts...
The Compaq hotline suggested that the BIOS might be outdated, and that they are not allowed to recommand a BIOS upgrade. Has something to do with the power management. Try to turn it off in BIOS.
Good Luck

I live in Ontario Canada and I recently hooked up to an offer for high speed internet through bell sympatico.
Im glad Im not alone,Has been driving me insane.
Computer runs great when up and running, shut it down, reboot it and then click on computer icon on desktop and the window opens but it is blank and ther is a flashlight searching for folders.Open up the control panel(which opens) then click on system folder,or network connection....nothing happens.Click on the broadband connection shortcut on the desk top ....nothing happens.
Leave the computer alone after boot up ...go get a drink come back and everything works?
I thought that the problem was with the software provided by Sympatico so I reformatted and used the xp built in software to connect, same problem. Will try the posted solutions tomorrow.
