XP Pro dosent see USB mass storage

My old drive was dying, had ME on it, I used a hard drive I had in a USB enclosure to make a USB mass storagedevice and pushed files and stuff off I wanted on to it from the old drive, I then installed the new drive, and put XP Pro on it. When I attach the USB device, it shows up in system properties as a 2nd HD, and I can also see it on the USB tree, but I cant see it in device manager as a removeable drive, or in Windows Explorer. any thoughts??
