Can I use the XP pro disk from Dell that is to be used for a lap top on a Dell PC?

Only if the Dell PC has a COA (licence) sticker with an activation key which is also for XP Pro.

Unlike some other manufacturers Dell didn't lock in their XP machines so you still had to enter the activation key, hence needing to make sure the version of Windows you are using matches the version on the COA label.

Also, OEM discs generally work on the machine(s) they were designed for (i.e.--a Dell OEM XP disc won't install on an HP machine).

Dell has a "System Locked Pre-installation" in their machines which is read by the software during installation of XP from a Dell Branded XP OEM CD.

Therefore a DELL XP CD whether Home or Pro will work on either a Laptop/Tower/Workstation etal
