Please help - Windows XP Pro cannot boot on my Compaq Presario 5600i with PII 450, 320MB RAM, 60GB Maxtor HD.
Clean installation was successful on a new Maxtor 60GB ATA133 HD. But XP didn't boot with this error message:
" Windows could not start because of the following ARC firmware boot configuration problem: did not properly generate ARC name for HAL and system paths."
Could anyone tell me what this means and how I can solve the probleM? I tried disconnecting all PCI cards and IDE devices (except HD and DVD-ROM), but the same problem remained.

I've seen that problem before. There is a simple answer to the problem.. It's a compaq. I've seen only few compaq's which allowed Windows XP to be installed. Thase computer just arent compatible as they should be.. Bummers. And about the error message, I don't know what it means. Sorry

check the size of your hdd and see if it is all available, con-pack, have this very annoying process of using a hidden drive to maintain thier power over users,i believe it makes it impossible to have full control on what upgrades to do with your system, you might try a fdisk with your old 95/98 boot disk, and then change the disk to ntfs with xp, dont know if it works, i found the only way to clean a compaq disk was with and old mobo that did a low level format. long time back i am not so sure that this will work, but .....
