XP PRO boots black screen with cursor

The subject basically says it all. I was in another room and heard the computer restart automatically (which it does sometimes), when I came in to look at it, it had started up to just a black screen with a white cursor. I could move the cursor around, as if XP had loaded correctly, but there was nothing on the screen. Have tried restarting several times, and it does the same thing if I start in safe mode, so I'm not exactly sure what to do at this point. could it be video drivers (I have the latest for a GeForce 4 MX) or a BIOS update issue? Any help is greatly appreciated, and I am running XP Pro, by the way. -will
