Hello, i have an old laptop. It's an IBM Thinkpad 380Z (Pentium 2, 233mhz, 92mb ram) What OS would be more efficient dealing with speed and start up time: XP or 98SE?
Thanks, Dave.

You have almost the absolute minimum system requirements. I don't think its worthwhile to put XP on it. However, it would work.
• PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
• 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
• 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space*
• Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
• CD-ROM or DVD drive
• Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ socket 939
1 GIG PC3200 DDR RAM
2x120 GIG 7200PRM HD's SATA/RAID 0
PNY Nvidia 6800 128MB
Lite-On DVD+-RW DL

I would try 98 as it is so much more efficient OS, and you might have to upgrade your bios to do this. If iot gives you headaches going in than 98 is for you, but I have put XP into marginal situations like this and it has run real well.

Of course XP will work on the 233mhz, 93mb RAM PC but with severe constraints (limited or no multitasking capabilities). If you want to have all the bells and whistles of Windows, use 98SE.

I owned the laptop you mentioned previous to the one I have now... Go with 98, the laptop will work with XP, but at about the pace paint drying on a rainy day.
With XP you will also have problems with random shut downs. Took a while to figure it out but it ended up being a conflict between XP and BIOS. To get around it I had to force XP to install as a STANDARD COMPUTER instead of PORTABLE COMPUTER. This of course buggers up standbyby, hybernate and a few other things.

either way, htink about adding some memory if you dull down xp it'll run 'okay' but, 98SE would definately be quicker.

Have you considered Linux? It will be more work at first (primarily because of the learning curve), but a properly configured Debian installation will likely outperform a comparable Windows installation on your hardware.
