Comment:

New 160Gb HDD, XP only boots from the CD. The Bios is adjusted to boot initially from HDD but booting only from CD. No CD no boot. Perhaps the problem relates to partitions in the HDD. Have used disk wiper to clear the HDD but on reinstallation the problem remains. Becomes frustrating and any advice appreciated.

Is there an XP installation on the drive now; you mention having (previously) wiped the drive???

At what point does the boot process stop if you don't have the CD? Does it say no OS found, no HDD found or what?

Go into bios and be certain that the hard drive is shown as 3rd boot and it is recognized for what it is in the right order...something is whacked and the mbr is messed up.
If all is well in bios, try booting to the cd and use "fixboot" in recovery console.

Could it be there isn't any "active" partition on the drive? A harddisk can have more than one partition so you have to flag which one you want to be bootable.
Try booting from a bootable (win98) cdrom and running fdisk to select the active partition.

Its interesting that the HDD drive has two partitions one is labelled C: and identified as the primary with NTFS system with a size of 128Gb it also described as "active" but there is also a partition labelled with an asterisk and also of type primary but this is "free".Perhaps this is normal and beyond my knowledge, but could this be affecting the boot parammeters?
Thanks to all those who have responded to my enquiry. derek

Hopefully you have solved your problem by now. If not, this may help. I had a similar situation. I went through much the same troubleshooting. Turns out I had the hard drive cable select jumper set improperly. Here's a link to the discussion:

BTW some people thought it might also be a bad cmos battery.
