Just upgraded from 98 to XP, i was able to find XP compatible software for most things except my Canon FB620p scanner, I downloaded the software off Canon USA's site, it says it was XP ok. When I try to load it I get a: "NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction" error. The MS website (Q245184)says to check my Command.com file in Winnt/sys32 and make sure it is not pre 7/11/95 dated. I checked the Win/sys32 (note not WinNT/sys32) file and it is 5/11/98 dated, the article also states to suck it down off a WinNT computer and replace it. I contacted Canon tech support and they said it was a windows problem and then mailed me the same MS (Q245184) article........
Anyone have this happen too? / any Ideas?

Thanx, I had the same problem, and now I know where to look. With my system it wasn't a old command.com file, but a (how do you call it in english) wrong link to command.com in my config.nt file.
It was: shell=command.com /e:2048 /p
I altered it to: shell=c:\windows\system32\command.com /e:2048 /pMy (16bit !) application now just works fine.

I have the same problem here, with some applications that are already installed and some that aren't, I've looked at or for the files listed above, but the ones I find I cannot read.
The Exact Error is in a 16 bit Windows Subsystem Box that
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.

Choose'Close to terminate the application'
The it gives you the option of Close or Ignore, the Ignore does nothing.
The way things stand now I have a utility in the computer I cannot use because of this error, nor can it be removed, even in safe mode........
I am hoping someone with some knowledge can shed more light on this subject and tell me how to fix it. I really hate to have to reinstall XP Pro again, or just say the hell with it and go back to 98SE.......

I am trying to make my dvd rpc 1 so it is region free. When i'm trying to install it in command promt it gives ntvdm.exe error! pls help
