XP not loading on extended partition

I was in the process of converting a single partition system to a dual boot linux/xp one. I used Partition Magic to convert my XP partition from primary to an extended partition. Now I get the "OS not found" message on startup. I've tried using fixboot and fixmbr to no avail. Any ideas on what it screwed up. Shouldn't XP be able to boot of an extended partition? It's within a couple hundred megs of the beginning of the disk.

Thanks.

You cannot run an OS from an extended partition.

Bugger. I was afraid of that. Unspoken rule of OS partitioning #1 I guess. At least now I know where to go. Thanks.
