XP network Quits after 5 minutes

I have a Windows XP home edition machine and a Win 98 connected to a 2 port router to my cable modem. The win 98 machine works all the time. The XP sees the internet and the other PC for about 5 minutes after boot up and then cannot see any thing on the network. I switched ports on the router and the problems follows the XP machine. I am stomped!!
