Comment:

I have read a few posts here about people having problems with mouse acceleration under Windows XP and here is the Solution.

In the "Control Panel", double click the "Mouse" Icon and choose the "Pointer Options" tab.

In the "Motion group" you will see a check box for "Enhance Pointer Precision"

It is this that enables acceleration.
Simply uncheck the box to remove the acceleration properties for the mouse.

If you would like to dabble in the registry instead (for the Techies out there)

Open up Regedit (Regedt32 is identical)
Edit the the following key...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse

and set the following values as such..
MouseThreshold1 to 0
MouseThreshold2 to 0
MouseSpeed to 0

Close Regedit.
You may need to reboot for the changes to take effect.

Happy gaming people!

I've been trying to find out how to get that off, but nobody seems to know the way, so I have the same problem still :(.

I've been researching the problem and it seems it enables "Enhance Pointer Precision" in Quake2. So if Quake2 crashes, and when I go watch mouse properties, there's Pointer Precision enabled :*(.

This is not the solution. Unchecking the "Enhance Pointer Precision" is useless for anyone who does gaming. It's not just limited to Quake either, it affects all FPS games as well as other mouse-dependent games. Though the "Enhance Pointer Precision" is actually the new WinXP jargon for acceleration, it doesn't matter whether its on or off, the mouse will still accelerate.

Thank you Microsoft for making such an INCREDIBLY simple function not work correctly.

I have tried to disable the VERY annoying mouse acceleration, but to no avail. Even if it is disabled in the registry, it still comes on whenenver any game is started. I sincerely hope that somebody comes up with a solution to this issue, so that I won't be forced to return my copy of XP and install 98SE again....

I have the same problem too, though in quake3 the acceleration is off, and it works smooothly:)

hi...I also think it some how related to direct x or dinput. The games that you can fix the bug in(quakeworld, cs), it is fixed by toggling the dinput command(or some variaty that effects it). Also not to mention XP uses DirectX8.1a which is only released for xp =( maybe someone can try exchanging their dinput dll files with the old ones and seeing if it does anything?

I'll say the same stuff here as I said at: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=34&threadid=616422

Is it impossible to fix the mouse acceleration problem that occurs in most games in windows XP? I have explained this MANY a time, and i will NEVER give up untill it's fixed that is. I've been to a lot gamer forums around the net and most forums came to live with the release of windows XP. Most popular new games are dependent on an accurate mouse nowadays. Most users use the mouse not accelerated, because then they can automate movments so that they can hit more accurate and such.

In XP mouse acceleration is default in windows and is called, for some wierd reason, enhance pointer precision. The gamer starts playing a game, let's say Counterstrike, because it is a popular game. He starts moving around and thinks, "man this is impossible, i can't hit a thing". He quits and enters the mouse meny, he can easily turn it off and move the mouse around and you'll feel that the acc is off. now the gamer is happy and starts playing the game again. But what the H*LL it's still there. Now he's frustrated and turns to the web. He finds a lot of other CS people having the prob, and suddenly a guy gives him some command line options to remove it in hl. But the mouse is still wierd and if he moves the mouse very slowly the pointer won't move at all. so he reads more and some guy tells him that if he turns off m_filter the mouse will be ok, but not filtered. so he does it and he's happy.

Now that was one game, which with many "fixes" plays ok, but a little crippled (unfiltered mouse).

Quake3 has it's own command cl_mouseacc 0 which fixes the prob, but games like Quake2 doesn't and doesn't have any command line options to help. This renders the game unplayable. I'm not kidding, i can't play quake2 anymore, I can barly move around correctly.

Now to what I have tried, I have tried turning off enhance pointer stuff of course, and i've been in regedit and edited mouse threshold, speed and such. I have tried both logitech and ms newest drivers and turned off acceleration in both.

But I got a clue once, i was playing quake2, running around and annoying myself about the mad mouse when it's froze, that was because of my insanly overclocked vid card. but anyway, when it locked it had to close it by pressing the close program button on the error window. Now the mouse in windows was accelerated too. I looked in the mouse options and saw that enhance ponter precision was turned on.

I've also heard that using the -dinput command line options fixes the quakeworld mouse.

Now there is a lot of bright people around here so I hope you can add some nice idea's to the discussion or ask some ms people or logitech people or something too look into it. I know a LOT of people who won't upgrade to XP solely because of the mouse bug!!!!

But of course, XP greatluy suck solely for this reason. I became very frustrated when nothing improved the situation, and how come that the mouse was ok in Win2k. those who programmed the drivers suck, microsoft sux, windows sux, and there is not even a hint on mircrosoft's site regarding this problem, and i'm thinking of returning to win2k and deleting xp unitl a appropriate solution is found.

I found it!!! when i was hacking through the registry generally setting to 0 all the mousethresholds that i found (whenever i found i set to 0) also there are two other options SmoothMouseXCurve and SmoothMouseXCurve, and i set those to 0, and when i started CS, guess what, no mouse movement, i returned to windows, switched mouse precision, and suddenly my mouse freezes, then unchecked it and it was all right. So this is the problem, I'm working on a fix right now

If U have logitech u must :
1) Install drivers
2) Check the NO box in motion, for mouse acceleration
3) Uninstall the mouse
4) Reboot
5) It works dont ask me why :D

I got the same probs too.
If you want no accerleration you have to choose the option in teh controlpannel.
The shut down the em_exec task AND.
Reneame or delite the em_exec from programs and from the prefetch folder.
Simply search your computer after em_exec
The bad thing is that you do not have any acceleration after deliting em_exec.
this is not a solution to me because i like a lill bit acc in the game.
You cant use the thumb button after deliting em_exec but the wheel work fine.
This is no real solution but its better then having full acceleration. ;-)
