XP Mboot: 2 min. to complete networking setup

May 24, 2009 at 19:17:46
Specs: Windows XP
My System:
Basic XP (SP2) with IE/OE 6.0 (OEM install early 2006)

Very minimal stuff runs on system startup.

After 30 second boot-up, almost everything will run right away, including web browsing with IE.

About one month ago OE started waiting about 2 minutes after boot-up to start. (If you wait 2 min. after boot, OE starts instantly after clicking its icon. Click OE icon right after boot, OE won't open until after symptom (1) described below has occurred:

Connected symptoms/diagnostics:

1) For 2 minutes after boot-up essentially no HD activity, then a few second burst of activity.

2) Same 2-minute delay ending in 2-sec HD burst under Safe-Mode-with Networking boot to complete

3) No delay under Safe-Mode-without-Networking boot

The latest download (2 days ago) of McAfee "Security Center" and XoftSpy found nothing.

Two processes show up in Taskmanager around the 2-minute mark of HD-burst after boot-up:

alg.exe
wuauclt.exe
nvsvc32.exe

Not sure how to see if these are asocciated with a cause of the problem or just a sympton (i.e. just being stalled for 2 minutes, like OE)

nvsvc32.exe is for my nvidia video card, the other two are supposed to be part of Windows. I could try to reinstall the nvidia drivers, but I don;t want to reinstall windows.
