When i'm trying to install xp on a maxtor 40gig hd i make it to the 6th disk and it either does 2 things. 1. Restarts with an ntload error or 2. Goes to a blue screen sayin it is going to restart the computer to keep my drive from damage. I've used western digital hd's for every computer i've built and this is the 1st time i've used a maxtor and I hate it. Does anyone have an idea of what I can do? Thank you for your help

Corey, I would suspect that it isn't the HD giving you probs, but the install itself. Did you totally hose the disk and reset a new partiton before starting the install, or is this an upgrade from another OS? Also, are you using floppies or something - you referred to the 6th install disk. Why not a CDROM?

I agree with Ranchhand. I suspect a setup problem and not the HD. I dislike the MS setup disk installation process. I've tried several times and have always had one problem or another with those six "setup' disks that MS supplies on their site.

Check this post for the way I install XP:

That's the exact screen of what happens when i try to install windows xp. It either shows up with this screen or restarts itself.

Corey,

Is this a completely empty hard drive? Or are you trying to do an upgrade to WinXP. I've seen this error before during an upgrade from Win98, but not a new install on a clean hard drive.

If this computer has not had an OS before, try setting the BIOS to it's defaults and trying again. Just be sure to write down your current BIOS setting is case you want to go back to them.

Post back if more help is needed.

Musky,

It's a brand new hd. Formatted and ready to go. I followed your instructions on booting and it seemed to work fine. It just doesn't want to go any further then "preparing to install windows" and then it either restarts or goes to that blue screen. I'm at work right now so i'll have to reset the bios when i'm home. Thank you very much for the suggestions. Hopefully it will work.

Thanks
