I'm pulling my hair out!! Have an XP machine that was connecting to the internet and now it won't. I'm able to see other machines in network neighborhood and I'm able to ping the gateway. I've checked the settings against a known good machine and everthing seems to match up. The firewall is not enabled under network connections/properties/advanced.

Here's what fixed my problem. First, in the command prompt type Ipconfig/release and then Ipconfig/renew. If you get a message that says, "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket", go to www.support.microsoft.com and search the knowledge base for article ID 817571. It gives detailed instructions on what to do.
