XP machine boots but I can't log on

December 17, 2009 at 16:52:25
Specs: Windows XP
My machine will boot, but I cannot logon -
even as administrator. It tries, wallpaper
comes up, then it logs off. I cannot boot into
safe mode - I get blue screen error. This
happen while removing the Internet Security
2010 trojan/virus. I think I damaged the
registry. How do I get in to fix the registry?
Thanks for the help.

When you perform a "repair" to XP by booting to the CD and following the instructions online how to do a repair the registry is put back to the default install. You may not want that.

If you need to you might be able to use a live linux or barts cd to get the backup copy of registry if it exists.
