My computer is not letting me log on. I ran a virus program that i found online. I noticed 1100 files infected with the "beagle" virus. Went to store, got upgrade for norton. Started up the computer in the AM and it won't let me logon. NOTHING i read on this forum works. It "logs on" then within 2 seconds logs me off and "saves my settings" etc.

What happened and how do I get passed it so that I can get to the infected files ASAP? I run a busy business online and I NEED all the info on the computer. PLEASE HELP.

also, tried safe mode, same thing. NOTHING will let me LOG ON. Hopefully it's right in front of my face for my business sake. any and all info would be appriciated. Thanks to all that can help.

Did you try a repair from the install menu?

I hate to pass on my bad news, but I had that identical problem on two systems. A Repair install would not get started. It would halt with a blue screen error. I had to install fresh on both of them.

If you are still here- Boot from the XP cd and go past the recovery console to the install menu. Select repair the existing installation. You won't lose any data except all the XP updates. Before you go on the net be sure the A/V and firewall is active as you will be susceptible to the sasser and msblaster worms. Then run the xp updates immediately.

If you do not have the CD I am afraid you are up the proverbial creek. The reinstall requires the XP CD. From the recovery console you can try FIXMBR and FIXBOOT, but may not work. Give it a try, you have nothing to lose at this point.

I was afraid of that, being up the creek that is. But is there any other commands that may take care of the virus that took over, beside the 2 you gave me? can i run a scan from the recovery console?

You can try CHKDSK /R. notice the space between K and / . That should clean up any problems on the hd, but not windows. Try it.

How about just installing Home Edition? Can I do that without being able to log on? Can I use that with the 6 set-up disks or are there seperate ones for home edition?
