OS: XP Home
CPU/Ram: 2.1ghz/256mb ram
Comment:

My system is a compaq 6230an and is 2.1ghz and 256mb ram. It came preinstalled with XP along with a bunch of programs and advertising crap. I find that when i log in it takes a considerable amount of time and the only "visiable" program (one with an icon in bottom right) is pccillin. I looked in msconfig at the startup list and there is a tonne of stuff from HP loaded in there but nothing there seems too unessacry. I am wanting ppl to post and give me an idea of of how long their XP systems take to log on(and only XP). Also pls post your specs and programs at startup so i get an idea of wether mine is normal or something is a bit amiss. Thanks

Use the search slot at the top of this page to find your answer. There are many - many answers to this problem. You will also find a link to M$ to download the cure.

Type something like "XP Slow Boot" or "XP Slow start up" or make up something that may get close to what you want.

hi,

check out blackviper.com
there is a list of almost all the startup programs there that you can compair yours to.
One of the biggest problems with your system is probably the ram is used up by a lot of the programs and/or desktop icons that are preloaded in a system like yours.
BV has a few threads that cover that too and makes good reading for future references.
good luck,
rc

Thankyou for your suggestions but what i am asking is for a comparison of systems that are XP and their login times.

I have an AMD Duron 900 with 256 meg of RAM, I have plenty of apps in startup, av, firewall, utilities, msn, nview, etc etc. and mine boots in about 50 seconds.

But as you don't give us the length of your boot, we don't have a lot to compare to do we?

A Duron 900 runs at about 0.9 of a GHz

30 seconds seems reasonable to me.

it takes me 20 seconds to logon and the computer useable try diabling every thing in msconfig and do all black vipers recomendations and find bootvis and install it
also when i set my computer to boot from the c drive first it was very noticably faster to boot
try spybot too a lot of slow systems can be put down to spyware

tell us how you went

Hi Hi,

Try http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/platform/performance/fastboot/fastboot-winxp.asp

Androo.. I thought that Bootvis was only a boot trace visualisation tool. I did not know it improved the boot load.
