Comment:

I can no longer log into windows - any user I try brings up the error message "The local policy of this system does not permit you to log on interactively".

I have been researching into this, and it would seem that someone has hacked into my computer and has changed the remote access policy to exclude myself and the other user of this machine.

I have the administrator password, so I can run the recovery console, but am stuck as to what to do from there. I have a command line prompt for ntrights.exe:

ntrights -m \\COMPUTER -u USER -r SeDenyInteractiveLogonRight

However, I am unsure as to how to run this program, and where it is located!

Somebody help!

ntrights.exe is located in the Windows Resource Kit. Luckily this page allows you to download something that includes ntrights.exe. Just copy over the file to a floppy disk, switch to A: in the Recovery Console and type that command.

Mike Higgins, since you can't logon, suspect you're correct about the hacker. Sounds like the password's changed. Open up the case and remove the CMOS battery for a while (about 30 secs.). That'll erase the password and allow you to set another.

I don't think the battery method will work as it's not the BIOS he cannot log onto, it's Windows itself so the CMOS reset won't affect this.
ntrights.exe should work though I've never tried it myself - please let us know how you get on.

Will try getting hold of ntrights.exe, but don't have a floppy drive on the laptop. Any suggestions?

Burn it onto a CD and use D: instead of A: in your command line.

I have tried using ntrights.exe, but can't run it from the recovery console.

I don't think there's another way of getting a command prompt up, is there?

I tried a repair install of windows, but this makes no difference :(

Someone help!!!

What i would do (as a last resort) is unplug the hard disk and plug it in another computer as a slave drive (maybe a close friend or relatives computer?). Copy all the files you need and reformat your hard disk once you have all the necessary files.

Be sure next time to have a Strong Password, consisting of capital letters, special characters and numbers.

You could try going to bootdisk.com and download a Windows 98 bootdisk, which will get you a command prompt to run ntrights.exe from.
