XP laptop LCD / Monitor question

This post could go in hardware forum but it's XP related.
I've got someone who's running XP home on a HP laptop. The question is: When he's at his office he plugs a monitor in but has to go into his display settings and turn off the LCD. Appearently the monitor's refresh rate is lower when the LCD is enabled causing slight flickering.
I'd like to find a way to setup his hardware profiles for different home and office settings. I've created different profiles on my win98 desktop system to disable certain devices on boot but never had to reconfigure for different monitors. Does a new hardware profile sound like the way to go? Thanks. -Russ
