Hi,

I have a 2 PCs running Win XP Pro and set up with a Lexmark T522 printer via an ethernet cable, and also used to dial into a remote server via a D-Link 56 k Modem.

One of the 2 works fine, with the exception that it will not print when connected to the dial-up connection.

The other PC will not connect to the dial up network, unless I disable the LAN connection first. Then it works like a charm(Obviously will not print as the LAN is disabled)

It seems to me that the LAN and Dial Up connections will not work side by side, and there must be a connection option I am overlooking somewhere...I have tried everything I can think of, and the PCs are indentical builds, in as far as they were built off the same CD, and have the same custom dialer software installed. All settings in Networking and TCP/IP set the same.

As the users dial into a system interstate, I am unsure on the profiling method, so its a real possiblity that somebody has logged into the non-working PC with a profile setting that has screwed over the PC...but I cant find what has changed.

Any help or suggestions? I have also seen the same problem with a straight up XP Pro laptop that was used to dial into an ISP, and also connect to a LAN...but when the dial up connection was connected, the LAN dropped out. Obviously there is a setting somewhere within the bowels of XP that is not right.

Cheers.

One of XP's security features to disable a net bios hack,, file and printer sharing for local networks is enabled when 2 pc's within the same LAN workgroup are connected

However when a connection over a WAN or internet is established file and printer sharing is disabled for lan networks There is a way to have the ICS and file and printer sharing,, However ,,,
As with all things in the computer world configuration of and enabling carry other risks and benefits You could enable file and printer sharing in the properties of the Internet connection BUT you are then leaving yourself WIDE open for a net bios hack

Someone else may be able to tell you more than I have ,, and a better way to configure YOur pc's to enable your machines to see each other and still share the internet

The best way I know is to configure your tcp/ip manually and configure a group policy for the other computer with user name and password access in order to access shares

Of course If I'm wrong on any point I Apologize in advance and I do hope someone will chime in on how to properly configure your little network>>> I would provide you with some links but right now I'm tooooo tired myself to go looking and post them

MSI 845e mb 768 mb ram and a p4 2.4n running xp ,win 2000 advanced server and win 98 SE alot to learn and I know so little !!!!

You may want to check the IRQ's for both systems to see if your using identical numbers.

The way to check is:

Control Panel,
System,
Hardware Tab,
Device Manager,
View button (at top) select resources by connection,
click the + beside Interrupt Request IRQ

If there are conflicts with numbers you may need to assign different numbers.

Hope this Helps, sprank

Thanks for your ideas.

I think I need to explain that the network only consists of a PC and a printer, so its simply peer to peer, nothing more. Reason it is set up like that is because the Lexmark printers we are supplied with do not come with LPT ports, only ethernet. In a normal case, it would be fine as it would run as part of the Network. However in this instance, it is a remote site that we support, that dials into via RAS to get network access.

I have been looking into it a bit more, and it may be the SID is identical on the two PCs hence causing a problem with the router table on remote server it is dialling into? (More info on this would be a help!)

I have also been told that it may be the workstation service causing the problems. (Again, more info would be great!)
