Folks, Can anyone please help. I've got a comp running xp pro. Everytime I try to boot it up it gets to the windows 'welcome' screen with the moving bar on it. Then just reboots. I can't even boot into safe mode.

Can anyone give me help on what to do.

Thanks in advance.
J

Do you have a floppy boot disk? If not I would hit the interrupt (F8 or F10) during the boot and change your bios options to boot to your CDROM first. That way, you could boot to your XP CD and troubleshoot from there.

Good luck,
Brian

I'm having a similar problem.... I have no idea what I'm doing... but just last week I spent 500 smackers buying a new mother board and a non-leech copy of XP and labour for this machine, and I dont really feel like spending any more money on it. Its 2.5 years old, and I dont feel like having to format this machine... I could get the repair guys to back up my stuff and replace the HD. But I would like to avoid this.

What's happening with mine is that I was working on school stuff... lots of applications going at once, and it started laggin. I rebooted the computer, and havent been able to bring it up, even in Safe mode. I brought it up once, in Safe Mode - tried to run Norton to see if there was a virus, and it ran for 8 hours, and then stopped. It didnt finish the scan. I've tried running the repair feature from the XP cd, but after I tried that a couple times, with no success, now it wont even recognize my HD, and the disk reboots the machine.

Now I have that stupid voice telling me that "My Hard Disk may have an error."

Do I need a new HD? would that solve everything? I have a friend who will give and install a comparable one for 125 bucks... is this too much?

Anyhow, e-mail me if you can help. Greatly appreciate anything I can try. I'm not sure what information you'll need to help me, so, tell me specifically if there's anything.

Brian,

thanks for the info, I'll give it a try.

Myrrh,

Try running scandisk to check for physical errors on your HD.
