My computer keeps rebooting into safe mode..To begin with,I ran chkdsk in Safe Mode, It finished, then tried to reboot. It would only reboot into Safe Mode again. I tried several times. No matter what user I used, the same thing would happen. I then tried System Restore and it didn't work. I tried "Last known Good Configuration" and it didn't work either. I tried to run at a command prompt (in safe mode) SFC/Scannow and got an error and it didn't work. I can't do a parallel install because I only have two factory restore disks which will wipe out everything and start over. I dont want to loose what I have on the hard drive..Its XP Home so I dont have Recovery Console..Anyone have this problem before? What can I do before starting completely over.

Have you recently installed any new hardware or software?
Also can you do a virus scan in safe mode?
sfc /scannow note it has a space in it plus you need to have the xp disk in.

No new hardware installed. Was working fine before running Chkdsk in safe mode..Dont know about viruses..Scanned a few days ago..Thanks..

Try to think back if you installed any new software, windows updates, drivers, etc.
Go into safe mode and remove them one by one till it starts.
One other option would be to remove some ram and try with just to boot with just one stick in and switch them around .....

Wow. I stumbled into a solution. I went into msconfig and looked at the startup tab. I was using a selective startup before because I had unchecked some startup items. I just selected "Normal Startup" and it worked..I dont know why. I had been using the selective startup (several items unchecked) and it was working fine for months. Now I just went back to "Normal Startup" and rebooted into a Normal desktop. I dont know what was my problem.. Why did this work? Anyone know?

Thanks for the responses..I have no clue what the problem was. If anyone does know what it could have been then let me know..Thanks again
