XP is frozen

Specs: Windows XP, 256 ram
I was using the internet when the computer froze. Nothing worked, my music stopped playing, the mouse wouldn't move and it wouldn't respond to keyboard prompts. So I restarted. (take note that my computer hasn't frozen like this before.)

While rebooting it got to the screen asking me whether I wanted to start in normal mode etc.. I chose normal mode and it froze again. So I restarted, again.

You get the point.

I've tried restarting and turning it off at the point numerous times sometimes the screen never loads and it gets frozen on start up.

Turning it off at the point seems to work the best as I can get to the desktop before everything freezes again.

I would greatly appreciate your help.
