I am just wondering about the general concensus is on XP. I have XP Pro and about five minutes after installation I decided never to go back to win 98SE. It is more secure (rather it is secure) with the NTFS file system. Also I like the option where I can switch users and let someone else use it while my programs are still running in the background. Also the new Mplayer that lets you burn directly to a CD from an MP3 is very clever and handy. I have had no problems whatsoever with hardware or software, though maybe I am one of the lucky ones. It is also about twice as fast on boot up. And no, I do not work for Microsoft (..... grin .... maybe). Any polite opinions or comments are welcome. Impolite rantings and attacks of a syntaxtical nature will be disregarded completely.

Yep..for ex Win 98 or Me users, Win XP is great. But for Win 2000 user, there is nothing new about Win XP, except new GUI and some candies (including 'newest-joking-MS-Crap: Product Activation) which need more resources.
In my opinion, Win 2000 is better than Win XP and I think Win 2000 is the last OS I use from M$, if M$ still trying to use some 'its new feature' to take control the system. It is MY Computer, NOT M$, that means if I wanna upgrade Processor, I dont need to report M$.
OR Someday I will learn Linux.....

when u have a doc in Word, does it Print Preview fine? mine and my roomates show only the left 2" and that's the way it prints. no one else has seen this.

xp is good, ive tried every operating system and win2k is the same as winxp but I like the new GUI interface with xp, I have also tried linux, I really havent got a chance to love it, I dont really like all the shells with linux, but it is better if I was using it for webserving or as a router for a system network. But XP does have its downsides....some of my older hardware doesnt have xp drivers, so I couldent use my secondary video card, oh well, and with kazaa, when you play video in kazaa and then go into Windows Media Player, the video is very unclear, there will be patches for xp and it will be at the top in about 5 years, too many people have attached to the bugged operating system win98.

Yup. XP is cool. I'm enjoying it even though I have one annoying hardware issue and a rather slow boot. Other than that everything works great. I think I'm one of few people that didn't have any driver problems. But then I really did my homework before installing the new system. It was worth it though:)

I find XP very stable, not to say it has never crashed though... was mostly due to my doings. All my older software/hardware was usable with a few upgrades, the GUI is much nicer than previous versions (some getting use too). My network was little tough to set up but there are a lot of resources out in "net" land that one should be able to figure it out. Recommend... YOU BET!

correction if you replace 5 or 6 items including your processor you have to reactivate. Ask me, I just upgraded. Any other operating system has its bad sides as well. Linux a good alternative does not have as many apps as the Microsoft OSes even with emulation in WINE. On top of that Windows is easier to use than any other alternative except the Mac. 10 to 15 years ago before the Microsoft monopoly happen companies had a chance to come up with a viable, easy to use alternative to the Windows and Mac platforms, they did'nt. No offense, but Microsoft love them make good products and I think XP is a great OS.

XP Home is a great product. XP Pro is a big letdown for business users. Is it really supposed to be an upgrade to Win2K Pro? The big reason for XP Pro- more money for the MS Legal Defense Fund...

I would have to agree with XP as an awesome system. I haven't run into any "activation" issues either. All I had to do was insert the serial number and no problems at all. I think the integration of the Office XP is fantastic and I like the GUI as well even if it does look a bit "fisher price" like. XP has sped my systems up (I have it installed on my Pent. II and a Celeron 800). Compared to all the problems I was having with Win98SE, XP has yet to cause me any problems. Only certain software was not compatible and as a precaution I removed it prior to installation and have replaced them with upgraded versions. XP isn't going to be "awesome" for everyone but compared to past products this one is MUCH better for most of us.

A 5 min review is no time to asses the situation.Post back in a day or two when she starts crashing left and right.
Don't get me wrong I like it(XP) fine, it just seems to take some "fine tuning" to get it to stay running for long.It remains the most active message board of any O/S any any board you care to check. This is largely due to numerous hard and software incompatibilities(sp?) that as yet remain uresolved.MS points to Mfg and visa versa, for now at least.

The reason this is the most popular topic of any OS is naturally because it is new. It is a new Operating System that is in its Infancy stage that will have some bugs and some issues that people need to resolve. I bet upon the release of Win95 that was the most posted forum, then Win98 was the most, then Me then 2000 etc etc etc.
As it is a new system there will be alot of new questions in regards to hardware compatability and drivers and that sort of thing. Plus since ALOT of people are upgrading from Win98 the whole operating system is quite a bit different so you will get all the questions about where things are and how to do things. I think it seems quite natural that there will be a fair few more questions.....but not nessessarily questions in relation to bugs or issues :-)

Hey, NTFS isn't something that comes with XP, i have it preinstalled with my computer and i have FAT32, dont credit the solid file system to Microsoft, they have nothing to do with it. *almost* any operating system's hard drive can be reformatted to be NTFS, unless for some reason it doesn't support it.

"NTFS isn't something that comes with XP, i have it preinstalled with my computer and i have FAT32"
duh????

700 Celeron with 384Ram, 11MB dedicated video mem was fine w/2000 Pro. XP definetly wants way more than I've got. It has some stuff I like(msconfig, system restore - ME stuff).

Win XP is OK for corporate IT administrator, LAN management & control...
The most I like in the new gui is the real font smoothing, paralel user-tasks and the stability of Win 2k, but with the known software incompatibility of win2k too(Starcraft with battle.net, Machines, and many more)
I think MS was very dumb not trying to solve battle.net win2k incompatibility. It's the most topic issue over the Starcraft community. Some people uninstalled winxp o needs 2 SO's because the can't play 4 years old games, for example.
All brands provided me affordable WDM, except foy my lifeview tc-card. Those drivers were released on jan 2002, a little late for me. :D

Yeah I am running XP Pro Upgrade from ME, i have been running it for about 3 months now using intensive graphics packages and games and general documents and it hasnt crashed once!i forgot what it is like till i go to Win98 on the college computers - a guarantee one crash per lesson!, hehe. XP is good when it is stable but when it goes wrong system resotre usually sorts it out except i had a NAV2000 go mad after i did a liveupdate then system restore it couldnt find the virus defs, i was playing with the registry for ages but it was a small cheeky folder that i didnt delete.
