question for you - trying to install XP on my computer at home and having major issues - fdisk>format (FAT32)> change boot sequence>boot to cd> setup starts> accept agreement> try to format using the NTFS file format> tells me the hard drive cannot be formatted it may be damaged> so I try to convert to the NTFS format> then tells me drive is corrupted and cannot be repaired> set fails> reboots
running celeron 900 on an Asus p3v4x
40gig HD
256mg RAM
standard video card
nothing specialPLEASE HELP ME THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR SOME TIME NOW AND IT HAS BECOME PERSONAL AND EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING

During setup, when you get to the point where you format the drive, have you tried deleting the existing partition and creating it from scratch? That may do it...

How about not using NTFS and stick with FAT32....if that works you can always convert to NTFS once XP is installed.

I agree with Tex, why bother with NTFS at all!!If you must, just wait untill after the install.

Thanks guys,
I have tried just leaving it at FAT32 and the same thing happens. I'm telling you, I am so ready to just chuck this thing out the window

have u tryed at a A prompt with a 98 startup type sys c:
wait till it transfers the system then try install again

Restart your computer with Win98 floppy. At the command prompt, run fdisk /MBR to write a new boot record. Restart the machine and use the format command on the floppy to set your hard up and also make available Win98 tools such as chkdsk /f and scandisk. Once the disk is clean and formatted, go after the XP install. As a rule of thumb, you don't want to have to make repairs during the install.
