xp installation goes blank

Specs: Windows XP, 2.1ghz/256mb
while installing xp on my system, all goes well till the message:
"To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER"
after pressing ENTER, the screen goes blank (black) but the system is still running. no further action occurs and i'l have to power down or reset and the same thing happens over and over. please help.

Explain ,>exactly how you are trying this installation.
Are you setting the PC to boot from CD first or are you trying to do it while the PC is running?

This sounds like a problem with the CD being read..

Run the CD under cold water only and dry it off with something 100% cotton. Try it again, and if it still doesn't work, then there might be something wrong with the CD itself.
