Windows installation freezes at 34 minutes while being in the INSTALLING DEVICES section. I have installed it in the past in this very same computer with no problem. Any ideas?

I have an original CD. I have attempted with other CDs. It is a clean installation formatting the HDD with NTFS system.

Are there any hardware devices installed or attached to the computer that weren't original?

"I have an original CD". Is this the same CD you used to install on that computer before?

This is a Laptop, correct?

Sometimes Windows seems to freeze but is still working. How long did you let it go?

Just try rebooting with the CD in place but don't hit any key to boot from the CD. It should pick back up.

It does pick up back but it freezes in that part. The original CD I used before no longer works so I borrow another. Then I tried with another and the problem persists. Any ideas?

Well, lets start at the beginning. Why were you re-installing Windows? Was everything working prior to the format?

Is the Teac CD drive properly identified in the start up screens?

Is this a laptop?

Is the Teac drive installed into a removable drive bay or fixed?

Is the Teac CD drive properly identified in the start up screens? Dunno. How do I check?

Is this a laptop? Yes it is.

Is the Teac drive installed into a removable drive bay or fixed? It is fixed.

To answer the question about the Teac drive. You may or may not see POST screens when first starting the laptop. If you don't see anything then enter the BIOS (setup) screens and disable fast boot and any logos that have an enable/disable option. Restart the computer after saving and exiting. Then watch the screens at startup. All the hardware should be identified by the BIOS and displayed on the screens.

If your internet connection is either a wired network connector or a wired dialup modem you may be able to disable those items in the BIOS. If the hardware failed for some reason then that could account for the install hang.

If you have the laptop connected to the internet/phone wiring then disconnect and try to resume the installation.

Ok. Just before it freezes the screen flickers a bit. Then it stops working. Might it be related?

The screen will flicker multiple times during an install.

You didn't address any of the items I mentioned in #7. Especially the internet connection.

Do you see other hardware identified? What screens do you see?

Kind of confusing because the CD works. It still should show in the POST screens.

Try booting to the BIOS> and looking in there to see if it configured.

Laptops are a little different than desktops because they have swappable drive bays. Even though yours doesn't, the BIOS may still have settings in need to adjustment.

The hang may be the optical drive or the controller for it. For whatever reason Windows may not be able to configure the drive.

Is the drive a faster model than the original?

You don't have any floppy disks, USB devices or PC Cards inserted do you?

You aren't using a docking station are you?

Too late now but before you decided to format & reinstall the operating system did you attempt any kind of diagnosis to see why the system got so sluggish and internet connection failed?

It is entirely possible the inbuilt network adaptor has failed in which case your installation is hanging when it gets to the "Installing devices" section. You may just be up for a motherboard replacement.

You need to weigh up the pros/cons of investing any more time/money into a system of it's age/limited power.

Richard59 mentions the same thing I touched on in #7. Richard's post may be more straight forward. I think you whould be able to disable the network adapter, if that is what you use to get on the internet. Could be a modem issue too, same solution. Some hardware is hanging the system.
