I don't know if my disk is messed up or what or whether it won't install on older systems.

Had the same error on my 300MHz PII, 128MB with win 98 running on FAT16 partition.
Moved everything to C: and formatted my second drive to NTFS.

Moved files I wanted to save to the newly formatted D: drive.

Loaded NT4 from floppies, used fdisk to wipe out all partitions on the primary disk.

Upgraded to W2000 (it was either that or find and load SP5.)

Upgraded to XP.

Moved all docs back to C: and reinstalled all programs.

Likely not the smarted route, but it DID work.
