XP installation error, asms,controls.man

Comment:

Ive been having trouble installing XP, due
to the problem with the "asms error." I
can not burn a new disk as the problem is
in my iso, and i can't get another. I've
been trying different methods using Linux
to manipulate the iso, and have narrowed
the problem down to the file
i386/asms/6000/msft/windows/common/controls
/controls.man,
which should be a short text file, but is
unreadable in my iso. For those on the
same track, i used tar to extract
controls.cat, because tar fills the invalid
bits in controls.cat with zeros and all is
fine. You could probably use dd also.

Anyway, what i really need is someone who
has XP 2600 running to post the text of
controls.man, to circumvent this anti-copy
scheme. Any help would be great, Thanks.

Also a cracked sxs.dll or a way to make the
install think that it has finished this
process by modifying the log files would be
great. Thanks.

Extract all the i386 directory on your HD and nstall from there.

I had the same issue and now I know it related to way you burn the ISO in.
Check http://chmsftwxp.conxion.com/installation.html for further info but first use CRC.exe (http://chmsftwxp.conxion.com/CRC.EXE) to verify that your ISO file is not corrupted.

when you burn the devilsown iso (2600 final no activation iso) with NERO you get that error. the solution we tested is as simple as stupid. burn the iso with CDRWIN and no problems occur.

Thanks guys for the suggestions, but Ive
tried all those solutions so far. The
problem is that the iso i have is actually
a nrg, ripped with nero, that i got from a
friend. Id like to avoid another download
(will if I have to), and the file is only
about 5 lines of XML text. It has a
password key, which i already know for my
distro, and will edit into it. At any
rate, i guess that with the monday release
the file will be all over the place
anyway...

How do you burn it with CDRWin? I've been looking for a way to burn an image file and all I see if for burning BinCue files.

OK, I've tried everything that has been suggested with the burn of the ISO.

I have tried NERO using the DAO option, CDRWIN 3.8F and 4.0A and attempted EasyCD 5.02. Only NERO and CDRWIN would burn the disk. EasyCD kept giving me an "unknown" error (gotta love those stupid messages).

Each time I do the burn I still get the GDIPLUS error in line 4. I have good copies of the .MAN files and when I compare them to what is on the newly burned CD, they are correct.

I've tried burning at all different speeds and with several different options, all have the same results.

The image is an ISO from DevilsOwn. I have checked it with ISOBuster and all looks good.

I am in the process of copying the entire I386 directory to the hard drive and running the install from their. I am going to copy my known good .MAN files before running the install.

Any other brain storms would be appreciated.

Well, I just tried the method of copying the entire I386 directory to my hard drive. I then replaced all of the .MAN files with the supposed, known good files.

Still the same GDIPLUS error in line 4.

I'm in the process of trying to get another ISO but no success so far.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

I had exactly the same problem. The problem is the .nrg
You need an .iso file .-- I burned it with EZCD 4 and lo and behold...no problem

Actually, this wasn't a .NRG, it was an .ISO

What I found out later was that it was corrupted. The way I found this out was to extract the .ZIP using WINRar. WINRar caught a CRC error and would not continue the extraction. WINZip missed the CRC error.

I downloaded another ISO and burned it using Nero and everything worked beautifully.

As for the EasyCD 5.02, I still can't burn anything with it. I don't know what the deal is with that but at this point, I don't care.

i have the same error that occurs just before the process of installation. the reboot already occured and i have finished the "preparing installation" step. i get a fatal error that says my cd is either corrupt or the file is missing. when i search for the file it needs asms. i dont know what to do except get a new xp pro disc, but thats hard. i cant get onto my computer and i cant go back to win 2000. im stuck in a bind and dont have the time to wait for a new cd. what can i do? (oh yea, i got the OS as an iso. i burned it as an image on nero, maybe thats the problem?
any help would be much appreciated and much needed.

thanks

The download from http://members.tripod.com/qwert183/Controls.man worked nicely Franz, what I had to do is copy all the installation files to my HD, replaced the control file and burn the CD, The only problem is Microsoft are out of order for charging for this product, Xp requires so many H/W and S.W updates & upgrades

Ok, i understand where to get all the files and such, but how do I copy it onto my HD. The directory is too big to fit on a floppy. Also, the only way I can get into dos is through my WinME boot disk, in turn my c: drive is not detected. The startup "f5" does not show command prompt in it because xp and 2k(my past version) only has "safe mode w/ command prompt". But since XP is not fully installed that option does not work. Any Ideas?

This is for people who are trying to burn xp, First do not try to do a disk to disk copy. This will corrupt the controls.man file in the 6000\msft\windows dir. I have tried using blind read/blind write, adaptec and many others. The best way to get this to burn correctly is to copy the entire disk over to hardrive (if not already on it) then add all files to the your burnable cd and burn. good luck

DO WAT I SAID!

copy all files to exising computer, and then copy all files and folders from CD to C:\winxp and then open up EZCD and select all the files and drag into the thing and use the http://www.windowsxp.nu/bootcd/

to help u, but that way is the ONLY way i found it to WORK perfectly!

FORGET TRYING TO COPY THE FILE TO THE WINDWS XP FOLDER WATEVER, U CANT DO IT! AND THE FILE IS PROBABLY NOT EVEN ON THE HARDDRIVE.

Hi,

Not sure if anyone is still checking this thread but I'll ask anyway :) I have a problem with the asms in that when I'm installing I get an error message :

installation failed : E:\I386\asms Error Message : Incorrect Function

I see other people are having problems with this but that it is complaining about corrupt files. I don't get any complaints but the installation program like this - just a very useless "incorrect function" message.

Before I ruin my current OS by trying again, can anyone tell me whether its likely to be the same problem and fixable by copying the files to the hard disk before / after the CD is created.

Thanks in advance

I have same error as above with

Installation failed: D:\I386\asms. Error Message: The parameter is incorrect.

Fatal Error:
One of the components that windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.

The parameter is incorrect.

I have used this CD to install XP on a different computer with no problems, I am now trying to install onto a new computer P4 1.6, Geforce 2 graphics and 60Gib HDD, 256mb DDR.

Any help would be appreciated
