I'm trying to install Windows XP on this new computer I got for my brother. It goes through the dos part of the setup, but after it reboots and goes to the gui setup I get errors. Half the time it gives me an error saying a certain file was not installed so it can't finish Setup. The other half of the time it says that a certain file wasn't installed and mentions 'Data error (cyclic redundancy check)', then procceds to tell me that the disc may need cleaning, but the disc looks clean to me. I've tried doing a clean install several times. I've also tried installing Win 98 (which worked), then installing Win Xp and it still didn't work. Anyway, its a P4 1.6, WD 40 gb, Sony DVD 16x, intergrated video, sound and nic, etc. etc. Anyone have any ideas on what to do?

Thats happened to me, the cd is screwed up. Chances are you need a new xp cd, or, you may even be able to copy the existing one and try it with that.

I did the same thing on my 2nd computer & the error messeges kept coming up. After 3 tries I uninstslled, wrapped up the software, took it back & was given a new copy. That was the problem-bad disk. Got the new one in with no problems. Best of luck.
