I bought a new case and transfered all my hardware to it. when i booted it up the bios kicked in but windows would not start.

i tried several times but got no joy. i tried several times.

i tried to reinstall windows but but the setup process only completes the first part of the installation. when the pc reboots it starts the first part of the installation again.

i have tried 2 different versions of XP i have. the other version i have is XP pro. i get the same result.

help please.

In changing the case you may have grounded the mobo or dislodged a memory stick or pci device. Recheck the mobo mounts that nothing is touching on the bottom of the mobo. Remove all device except the video card and 1 memory module and try it.

You say it is set to boot from the hdd? Reset it to boot from the cd first and then the second boot when it asks if you want to boot from the cd don't touch it. It will continue on it's own.

i have swapped the ram and have changed the boot priorities and the same has happed again.

the bios doesnt give me the choice not to boot from the cd it does it automatically. i have looked abount in bios but i cant see a setting to stop it from doing this.

The only thing left is to change the video card. You may have damaged the mobo or the cpu when you changed the case. I would also try reinstalling in the old case just to see what happens.

Can you boot to a dos prompt with a dos Windows boot diskette? If you have a second hard drive install it next and try booting from it with only the boot files.Use a Windows 98SE boot disk to load the boot files to the hard drive:
sys C: (press Enter)
Good luck.

You CPU may not be seated correctly, I suggest you dismount and disassemble the CPU/HSF and thoroughly clean it out, then reassemble it & make sure this time around it is seated properly.

If you just moved the hardware from one case to another, the bios or any setting for that matter would not have changed. You either have a bad ground or something (hardware) is now bad as it may have gotten hit with static discharge. Does the new case have a speaker and if so, do you get any beeps? If you do get beeps, how many and when; if you dont have a speaker, take it out of the old case and put one it, the beep code may tell you exactly what is happening

I'm not even looking at the win install part, once you get it to boot properly the install part will fix itself. One beep is normal. Do you have other RAM thta you can put in or maybe have 2 on there that you can take one out?

I have only seen this type of problems when the Hard Drive was not set to active. Was all the drives moved to the new case and all the robbon cables put back the way that where in the old case.

let me get this straight. you run the initial install from the Windows CD? Right? it loads all the necessary files to the hard drive and then does it say "restart in 15 seconds". Then the computer reboots. Right?

When the boot order is set 1: CD-rom 2: HDD. It will say "press any key to boot from CD". However, after the first run of files loading, you do not want to boot from the CD, but the HDD. Setup will continue without any manual interference on your part. So don't press a key to boot from CD after the initial windows file load.
