Do not instal as an upgrade. Too many programs and drivers in 98 are not compatible with XP. If you can, slave your harddrive into a working system, copy any data/files you want to keep and format the drive. Do a clean instal.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

If you are formatting it you realize that wipes all files and data? Once that is done you set CDROM as first boot device in bios and boot up your XP disk. Follow the bouncing ball to instal. If this is an "Upgrade" disk you will be prompted for proof of prior qualifying product. At that point you remove the XP CD and insert your 98 instal disk. After verification simply swap back the XP CD and complete the process.

Do you know how to boot into bios? Usually press Del or F1 or F2 during bootup to get into bios. Once there you need to navigate to boot order and set CDROM as first boot device with possibly floppy second and harddrive last. Insert the XP CD in the drive then save and exit bios. It should then restart and boot from the CD.

Try using your 98 boot disk to format ( change the bios to boot from floppy 1st )

After formatting, change the bios back to boot from cd & restart the comp with the cd in the drive.

Boot up with your 98 bootdisk and start "with CDROM support". Insert the XP CD. Navigate to the I386 folder of the CD and enter "winnt" without the ""
That should start the XP setup

You can download the boot disks, is the HD, Cd etc, being reconised during the boot up, use the pause button to read the startup screen, hit the space bar to move on.

It takes a while to copy the files. Just check the harddrive activity light. If it is on/flashing then progress is happening.
