During the XP installation, F:\i386\asms fatal error message shows up. It stops the installation process then you can not go back to the old version of window to boot.
Help!

Yeah, I got the same problem as well, and to make matters worse, I formatted my whole hard-drive, so I cannot go back to my old version of Windows-98. when installing the windows XP, I got the following fatal error:
"D:\I386\asms\6000\MSFT\WINDOWS\common\controls\controls.man". What can be done to remedy this problem. PLEASE HELP N' ADVISE.

i've been working on this problem for a week now. i get the asms error on the 3rd reboot of the cd install, right at the point when the install wizard first loads a vga desktop.
the asms files are the first point pulled off the cd at this point of the install. for some reason a cdrom driver has not been loaded prior to this first load up of the vga install phase.
hence, no acces to cdrom, no continued loadup of the windows install files.using a global ntfs file system at this point has proved difficult to over come since the remote console has no aparent ability to load drivers.
i've tried using a fat32/fat16 partitions, and proloading the i386 files into a directory of c: prior to starting the cd setup. at the point where the install fails to find the "asms" files, i point the install program to the i386 directory of c:, and it begins to load
Problem: the registry points to \i386\ so, after every file it prompts me for the location of .
for every single file.
i cant hit enter that many times.
problem 2: i cant get regedit to launch in console, even though every single web site out there and microsoft technet say you can.
any ideas. mail to kcander01@hotmail.com
