Hi
My computer is 800mmx Pentium 111 laptop. I upgraded to windows xp. No problems no error message. My computer started to malfunction, batteries wouldnt hold charge telephony stopped working, system files randomly go missing. Also the hard drive makes aserious grinding noise and sometimes the serial port does not work. There are no viruses. I sent it to Phillips Priority1 warranty service and they said there is a compatibility problem with xp. I ran all the diagnostics etc and no problems there. No conflicts in services etc. Checked auto exec bat and win inis again no issues.Phillips also told me xp only works on pentium 4. They told me you can only have one internet provider or a dsl line and that you can overheat your computer by using it too much. Please is this total garbage? How can I combat this they have held my computer hostage for three weeks now and I am supposed to have on site or 48 hour turn around time. If any one can help Please I am desparate thanks!

I am running XP on a Pentium 2 with 433Mhz with no problems. They are giving you the runaround because they don't know what they are doing, so are blaming the OS.

There's no way an OS can cause these problems. I have XP installed on a P3 and a friend has it installed on a P2. I have it installed on a P4 also and none of these system have experienced any problems. Are these people serious? Ask to speak to a supervisor at Phillips because I suspect one of their tech support agents is smoking crack on the job.

Instead of getting off their tooshes, too many manufacturers are blaming the operating system for their lack of new drivers and any clue how to make their hardware work with it.

It is sad and frustrating for the folks who cannot and who don't want to buy new things so that they can play with the new O/S they paid a lot of money for.

Thanks for all the feedback! This info was what a senior tech connected with Philips communicated with us. Do you think they can really hurt my computer or will I be able to fdisk and start over if they ever send it back?? I appreciate you all taking the time to help out!

If your hard drive really was making a grinding noise, I would suspect that there are hardware problems. Those things just spin, unless a bearing goes bad or you experience a head crash. There may indeed be a problem with overheating, but it is the hardware that is at fault, not the operating system. The software can expose a hardware problem, but should not be able to cause one.

I purchased an UMAX Astra 4000U from IBM. I have not been able to install it to Windows XP because I receive a message, "Scanner does not have power on." (Power is on) I contacted IBM and was advised to contact the manufacturer. I did and was advised by UMAX they do not provide technical advice for Windows XP. I sent several emails and received one response that was no help. Appreciate any input.

Hi
A lot of people are having success with using win 2000 driver instead. If you are still on free support with microsoft for xp sometimes they can suggest a work around
