Comment:

OS is XP Pro. Using Internet Explorer 6.
When I try to save a picture in Internet Explorer (right click on the picture and click Save Picture As...) all it gives me to save (Save as type) the picture is in Bitmap (*.BMP) format. When I go to the Properties of the picture online I see that the picture is in either GIF or JPG format.
How do I change the settings of my computer to save the picture as GIF or JPG? I don't like saving pictures as BMP because of the file size is much bigger in BMP compared to GIF and JPG.
Thank you,
Cosmo

...an explanation first....

If I have a jpg file and change the file extension to bmp, it doesn't make the file a bmp file. What I'll have is a jpg I can't open because it has the wrong file extension.
.....................
The files you're downloading are gif's and jpg's. If for some reason they get saved with the bmp extension, you can simply change the extension and expect things to be fixed. Another thing you can try is changing the file extension before it's saved.

As far as how to change your IE settings I can't help you because I don't use it. It's a substandard browser and it causes many more problems than the one you're having.

Love your comment about taxes. I agree totally.

First ... a better explanation.

When you right-click to save a jpeg or gif image, you DO have the option to save it as a bmp file as well. So, what Deputy DooDah
said is incorrect. The files you are saving are bitmapped files.

The problem is due to an error that is caused when your internet cache gets full. You might also have lost the ability to view source for a web page.

To fix the problem, simply open up internet options (Tools>Internet Options) then from the General Tab select the button to Delete Files. Another dialog box will open to confirm and it will give you the option to Delete All Offline Content (I usually select that option as well). Once the files are deleted from the cache, restart IE and all should work as expected. If not, post back.

That worked. I have the same issue on a WIn 2k pc, will do the same for that one as well.

Thanks Michael J, Laler and Tufenuf seconding and thirding Michael J. It worked like a charm, didn't even think to delete my temp files.
