I'm not sure of the best way to explain this, but an example is probably the most effective way.
Background: I am running XP Pro on a Sony Vaio notebook--900 Mhz, 128MB mem (I know, I know I REALLY need more memory). Obviously I have IE6, but even when I installed Netscape, I had the same problem.Problem: I will type something like www.google.com into the address bar. Something like www.microsoft.com (something I have been to in the past) will load, although the address bar still says www.google.com.
Sometimes if I close the browser and open a new one, things will run smoothly for a little bit. Rebooting the system does the same thing--it's a temporary fix, that only sometimes works.
I did notice that before I start having problems pages tend to start having problems loading. Images won't load, or scripts will have errors (where I know the page normally loads fine).
I have tried clearing the cache and history...I have IE set to check for a new page version on each visit to the site, and the temp internet files are *SUPPOSED* to be cleared each time the browser closes (this isn't working either).
I tried using Netscape...I tried reinstalling XP...
And ideas? I have not seen anyone else report problems like this--which is a bit frustrating (but no where near as frustrating as not being able to do research online....)
Lauren

go to www.opera.com and download Opera 6 for win32.
This browser is great for all win32...even for xp/nt whatever.
Just use standard Opera and you can internet with no probs...opera is correct at all internet standardssucces!!

Upon reading your post, and finding another like it, I feel like it's my first day at a support group for people with some extremely rare disease. (They always seem to involve the skin). I'm relieved that I am not the only one suffering; others share my pain. Others who, well, run IE on a new VAIO.
Sony VAIO, XP, & IE seem to be the common DEMONinator for this problem. (See two more posts below.) I've since ruled out a 3rd party program causing the problem: I defragged my drive, reinstalled the basic nuts and bolts and nothing else, and the browsing problem was still there.
If you find a solution, please do tell. Perhaps it's time to call SONY and complain.
