Hello Friends,

I am having strange internet access problem

Here is the scenario:

Dlink ADSL modem through which I connect to my ISP.

Then Dlink modem connects to Netgear WGR 614 v7 using ethernet cable.

At my place I am having one desktop computer and 3 laptops one of which is HP Pavilion.

Except HP pavilion all other computers can access internet without any problems.

But HP Pavilion has issues with wireless connectivity. (no issues with LAN ethernet interet access)

This has happened only after trying to set up my Netgear wireless network.

Laptop cant further find any wireless networks in range at all. I checked the device manager which shows wireless driver has no problems.

I have unistalled Intel Pro Wireless 3945abg driver and restart the computer. Even after re-installing driver it does the same.

Any suggestions would be much helpful!

Thank You

The router may not be set to broadcast the SSID.

BTW there ia a Networking Forum up the page where similar problems have been noted. Each page has a Search Facility.

Initially use one of the laptops that do work "OK" to the internet as a model and check "every" setting on the problem laptop against the good one.

This means tcp/ip settings etc. in the wifi options - not the least the channel you are using...

Ensure the wifi option is enabled in the problem laptop – as in switched on in the wifi card’s settings.

Not having wifi on the PC I’m on at present (not being chez-moi just now) I can’t recall and point you to the exact areas to check – from memory…

Also if you are using some degree of security (and it's very wise to have some level involved) verify that the problem laptop is known/included accordingly...

By this I mean that if you “are” using (at least) MAC filtering (this typically is set as “allow only these MAC addresses to connect”- one of the three options in the router) that you have included the problem's MAC address in the permitted list (and that it is "correctly entered” - even a slight difference/error will be suffice to prevent the laptop from getting on...).

You say this problem laptop can’t see “any” wifi networks at all; do the other systems see more than one – i.e. not just yours but others in the neighbourhood too?

May be a useful “help you to work it out” – from HP support. It may not be for your model laptop – you don’t specify what it is – but it will perhaps serve as a model to follow. And you can always track down details specific to your model?

Thanks trvlr

I thought I should give you update. The HP Laptop that has problem is my friends and not mine.

He somehow did format on his laptop for some unkown reasons after trying to fix it by our own. Surprsingly it has helped him to some extend.

Let me clarify..

The laptop is bought from overseas (??? could this be problem with frequency??) and is new. It had virus infection which has been fixed and removed using AV software and then complete format.

After doing this laptop started picking up wireless networks in range which was not happening before at all as you can see from previous notes.

There is not much security set up in the router apart from network name and WPA enabled. (no mac filtering or static ip assignment)

The problem now is reception is weak and very intermittant. Drops out and then picks up automatically without and apparent reason.

While at the same time other two laptops (IBM and Dell) has no issues at all. These laptops can pick up own and others network in range.

So I am thinking if its problem with wireless card or compatibility between netgear and HP pavilion laptop?

Anyway I will try to get in touch with HP tech support.

mmm - could be the sensitivity of the on-board wifi adapter is not up to much...

Depending on what part of the known universe it was from originally... it "might" be set to operate on different wifi channel than present location? This is easily rectified as one can (as you probably already know) select any channel you wish; it just has to be the one that set (by the user) on the local router wifi too...

However as it appears to pick up (and then drop) the local router signal already... I doubt that this is the problem; but it wouldn't hurt to check...

As it is new, it would be wise/useful to lean on HP support at this early stage. It might just be that the on-board system is not quite as it "orta be..."; and any issues there may be covered under warranties?
