Comment:
I have a valid copy of Windows XP Home edition. I still have the box with product ID number just don't have the disk. I found a XP home disk from a friend erased my HDD started to run the setup.
NOW I am at the Enter Product ID screen. I enter my product key (yes I am typing it in right) and a message keeps comming up saying " The Product ID you entered is not valid"
wtf is up with that What do I need to do to fix this problem? I don't want to enter a generated key because I baught and payed for a real one.

So far as I know each CD is specific to the code key on the box. You will have to call MS and explain what happened to see if anything can be done.

From my experience, each CD is not specific, however, an OEM product key will not work with a retail CD, etc, etc. However, if you use a retail CD and have a retail COA and product key, you should have no problems.
