I have been trying to setup a home network, without much sucess. The host is running WinXP, client is a win98 laptop. Both have eithernet cards, connected via a crossover cable. The WinXP host has a modem to connect into my ISP. Dialing in is not a prob, and it puts the "connected" icon down in the systray. However, there's a 2nd icon in the systray for the network card, and it is always red-xed out, with a "network cable unconnected" error message on it. The crossover cable is formly plugged in, both on the WinXP and on the win98 sides. Any ideas?

Not sure but is win xp on NTFS and win98 on Fat-32. Just curious. Maybe someone knows if they both must be the same.

You might need to download a file from XP (setting up network) to run on your computer that has win 98 to allow it work together. It worked for em.

put your xp disk in your 98 machine and select additional features when the autorun pops up then go to network setup and it will install the neccessart protocols.

Just to be safe get another network cable to replace that one connected to your 98 machine

I would take a look at the cross over cable. When you have a network Icon that is RED Xed out that usally means that the network cable is unpluged or broken. Make shure the network cable is not to close to a light fixture or transformer. Also check the cable ends too.

Just install the NETbeui protocoll on WIn 98 and XP PC. NETbeui is not suported in XP but if you go to my web page http://dxintel.perl.cx/xpframe.htm there you will find information on how to install NETbeui on XP.

Good Luck..

The fact that one may be NTFS and one may be FAT is not an issue.

If the cable shows disconnect, that is the place to look. Make sure the cable is good. Make sure both NICs are set to the same speed.

I wouldn't go to the hassle of jumping through hoops to install netbeui. Granted, it is a much simpler protocol but with automatic IP addressing in 98 and XP you don't really have to worry about setting up IP as it will be done automatically.

Just because it says it's disconnected doesn't mean it is. Mine says that when the client computer is turned off.

I want to set up a home network using win'98 on the host and a wireless router to connect to other pc's in my house. Would anyone please refer me to a source of information on how to do this? (The router maker's installation instructions assume that the network already exists).

This problem can occur if
1. CHeck if your nic is enabled on xp
2. check if you have the profile for the nic on win 98 enabled since it is a laptop there are options t disable that
3. check the ip addresses if you have netbeui installed then forget the tcip thingy.
4. make sure you logon to your windows 98 laptop
create the same user name on both computers with the same passwords ans try
if none of these work try networking the laptop to another poc and see if that works. let me know the results
